Chapter 1: The Boy Who Didn’t Like the Dark

In the little town of Fernbell, where stars danced every night and fireflies blinked like fairy lights, there lived a boy named Eli. Eli was brave during the day. He could climb the tallest tree, race the fastest bike, and even pick up a wriggly frog without flinching.
But when night fell and shadows crawled across the floor, Eli wasn’t so sure anymore.
He didn’t like the dark.
“Dark is just the sky resting,” his grandmother would say. “That’s when dreams come out to play.”
But Eli still kept three nightlights on and hid under his blanket, waiting for morning.
Little did he know, something magical was about to change everything.
Chapter 2: The Whisper from the Water
One moonlit evening, Eli stood by Luma Lake behind his house. It was said the lake was once filled with floating lanterns that whispered dreams to those who couldn’t sleep. But now, it was still and quiet, as if it had forgotten its own magic.
Eli tossed a pebble into the water.
“Why are you so dark?” he asked.
The water rippled. Then, as if in reply, a glowing light rose from the center of the lake. It was a lantern—golden, round, and humming gently, like it was alive.
It floated toward him and stopped just above the surface.
A soft voice echoed from it:
“Eli, would you like to know the secret of the night?”
Eli blinked. “You’re… talking?”
The lantern bobbed.
“I’m Lumi, guardian of Luma Lake. Come with me, and I’ll show you that darkness is full of wonder—not fear.”
The lantern floated up higher.
Eli took a deep breath, nodded, and stepped into the glowing boat that had suddenly appeared beside him.
Chapter 3: Journey Into the Night
As soon as he sat down, the boat gently lifted off the lake and floated into the sky.
Eli gasped. “We’re flying?”
“Yes,” said Lumi. “We’re visiting the places that live inside the night.”
First, they passed a valley filled with sleeping giants, their snores soft as thunder.
“Giants are loud during the day,” Lumi whispered. “But at night, they hum lullabies to the wind.”
Then they floated over Glowberry Forest, where the trees only bloomed in moonlight, and leaves shimmered with silver edges.
They stopped briefly by The Nesting Hills, where dreambirds snuggled inside clouds and laid eggs that hatched into dreams for children around the world.
Eli’s eyes sparkled. “I didn’t know the night had so many stories.”
“It’s not about seeing everything,” Lumi said. “It’s about feeling everything.”
Chapter 4: The Cave of Shadows
Suddenly, the boat dipped low into a canyon.
Ahead was a dark cave, and Eli’s chest tightened.
“Do we have to go in there?” he asked.
“Only if you want to learn the most important part,” Lumi replied.
Eli hesitated… then nodded. “Okay.”
Inside the cave, shadows danced across the walls—shapes of wolves, dragons, even scary faces.
But Lumi whispered, “Look again.”
Eli focused. The shadows shifted… The wolf became a puppy, the dragon turned into a balloon, and the scary face became a smiley moon.
“They’re just shadows of your own thoughts,” Lumi said. “They only scare you when you don’t understand them.”
Eli laughed. “They’re not scary at all!”
Lumi sparkled brighter. “And neither is the night, once you befriend it.”
Chapter 5: Return to the Lake
The boat rose again and floated back toward Luma Lake. The sky was turning a soft purple—the first whisper of dawn.
As they landed, Eli saw dozens of other lanterns floating above the water, each glowing gently.
“They’re lighting the lake again,” Lumi said. “Thanks to you.”
Eli looked around. “Why me?”
“Because you were brave enough to listen,” said Lumi. “And now, you’ll help others see the night as something to love, not fear.”
The lantern hovered close to his hand and gently touched his palm. A warm glow pulsed in his chest.
“When you close your eyes tonight,” Lumi added, “remember this light. It’s always there, even when you can’t see it.”
With that, Lumi rose back into the sky.
Chapter 6: The Light Inside
Eli woke up in his own bed, the morning sun peeking through the curtains.
On his nightstand was a small golden pebble, smooth and warm—just like Lumi.
That night, when the stars came out and shadows painted the walls, Eli turned off all but one nightlight. He held the pebble in his hand and smiled.
For the first time, the dark didn’t feel empty. It felt alive.
And as he closed his eyes, he whispered,“Goodnight, Lumi. I’ll see you in the dreams.”
